Plant a Tree in Niagara Parks
Help Niagara Parks Offset the Impacts of Emerald Ash Borer
The Niagara Parks Emerald Ash Borer Management Plan Donation Program allows everyone to assist in the conservation of the Niagara River’s natural environment while contributing to the stewardship legacy of Niagara Parks for the enjoyment of future generations.
For each $25 donated, two trees (approximately 90 to 100 cm in height) will be planted in south Niagara Parks, where ash trees are in high concentrations. All donations will be used directly for the purchase of native trees (Maples, Oaks, Sycamore, Tulip Tree, etc.), which will be planted and maintained by Niagara Parks staff. Specific location requests will be considered, however specific selection, timing and placement of trees will be at the sole discretion of Niagara Parks.
What is the Emerald Ash Borer Management Plan?
Since the discovery of the invasive Emerald Ash Borer at Niagara Parks in 2013, staff have been monitoring and evaluating the effects of this destructive insect on the many ash trees along the Niagara River Parkway. The loss of these ash trees will have significant impacts to the Niagara River shoreline, park lands, and natural areas. In response, Niagara Parks has developed a proactive Emerald Ash Borer Forestry Management Plan to address the threats of this particular species.
As Emerald Ash Borer populations increase over time, this proactive plan will help preserve the environmental and aesthetic benefits of the tree population within Niagara Parks and support public safety through a combination of monitoring, tree removals, re-plantings, treatments, and public education strategies. Over the next 5 years, Niagara Parks' management plan will focus on the removal of declining ash trees which pose a threat to public safety and replanting with alternative native tree species that are not impacted by the Emerald Ash Borer, such as Maple and Oak trees. With tens of thousands of ash trees expected to succumb to this insect within Niagara Parks, there is a significant need to plant trees to ensure forest cover and plant diversity remains for generations to come.
